Mechanical Drive Units

Selection & Installation Guides | Brochures

For most, they believe the only solution to install an Autopilot or Jog Steering System on a mechanically steered boat is to convert the vessel to hydraulic steering.  This is not true, the Octopus remote rotary Mechanical autopilot drives makes it easy and economical to install a Jog control (Octopus Intellisteer) or an automatic pilot on powerboats steered with mechanical push pull cable steering systems including Outboards, Sterndrives (I/O’s) and Inboards.

Very simply, if a motorboat has a cable steering system, then the Octopus Mechanical drives will be powerful enough to steer the boat.  The only restrictions and options being related to installation requirements are fully detailed in the installation guide.

The Octopus mechanical autopilot drives come in four types:

  1. Type S - Standard Straight shaft for mounting behind the dash
  2. Type T - Straight shaft tilt version for mounting behind the dash with a steering wheel tilt facility.
  3. Type R - Stand Alone Remote version for mounting as a separate drive system with its own cable and mounting kit
  4. Type RS - for Simple mounting to Mid range Yachts with restricted installation Space. Ideal for fast cruising and racing yachts.

Note: Optional Integrated Rudder Feedback Unit
The optional integrated Rudder Feedback unit is attached directly to the drive making for very simple installation.

It is available in two types, a universal unit that works with all major manufacturers and dedicated manufacturer versions.

See section Integrated Rudder Feedback units below for options.

Type S – Standard Straight shaft for mounting behind the dash

This drive can be mounted in 2 ways, either at 90 degrees to the dashboard or at 20 degrees to the dashboard.  Spacer Kits are also available to reduce the space required behind the dashboard.

Type R - Stand Alone Remote version for mounting as a separate drive system with its own cable and mounting kit

The Remote drive unit can be installed in any convenient location; it requires the addition of a second steering cable and connection kit. There are connection kits for Mercruiser or Volvo Penta   stern drive engines, Outboard engines and a universal kit for inboard engines. The drive is mounted in a location away from the heat and vibrations of the engine. An interconnect cable is used to connect it to the engine steering system using one of the simple to mount connection kits.

Type RS - Unique RS Sailboat Drive designed for simple mounting to mid-range yachts with restricted installation space

The Octopus Remote Sailboat Drive System makes it easy and economical to install an automatic pilot on light displacement Sail Boats steered with a mechanical system from a wheel or tiller. The system is designed for the modern mid range sail boat which has restricted space to mount a standard Linear drive. The drive is very responsive and has little feedback resistance when in ‘Stand by’ mode making it very suitable for racing yachts.

Recommended for Yachts up to 38Ft (11.5m) with a maximum displacement of 15400 Ibs / 7000 Kg.

The system includes a drive unit, a steering cable and a linear drive connection kit. The drive unit Can be mounted either horizontal or vertically in any convenient location. The steering cable length is determined by the relative position of the drive unit to the linear drive connection kit.

Integrated Rudder Feedback Units

Complete Installation RFB Module

Typically one of the most complex and time consuming aspects of autopilot installation is fitting the rudder feedback unit and ensuring that the geometry matches the full range of rudder movement. The solution is an integrated rudder feedback unit that directly mounts to the drive unit itself.

The Rudder Feedback unit’s come in two types. The universal RFB unit (OC15SUK27) has small switches making it generic to all major Autopilot manufacturers.

The standard RFB unit’s (OC15SUK27A – OC15SUK27E) are dedicated to a particular manufacturer.

Both types are attached directly to the drive unit for simple installation.
